PILATES

Pilates is a form of exercise that was developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century. Joseph Pilates coined the term Contrology to define his exercise program.  According to Pilates, Contrology "is the conscious control of all muscular movements of the body. It is the correct utilization and application of the leverage principles afforded by the bones comprising the skeletal framework of the body, a complete knowledge of the mechanism of the body and a full understanding of the principles of equilibrium and gravity as applied to the movements of the body in motion, at rest and in sleep" (Pilates, Joseph. Your Health. 1934). 


Pilates fitness helps build flexibility, strength, and balances the body so that it improves overall posture and function. Exercises can be performed on a mat and various pieces of equipment. The Pilates principles include breathing, concentration, control, centering, whole body movement, balanced muscle development, precision, and rhythm. All of these principles allow individuals to feel better from the inside out.
